West Boylston Middle High School heads into exam week beginning January 19th.  All students in grades 7-12 will participate in “Midterm” or in the case of high school courses, “final” exams. Exams typically count for 5% of the students’ end of term grade, though this percentage can vary by course and teacher. The exact dates of the exams will be January 19th for Middle School Foreign Language exams and January 20-21 (both are early release days) for all other grade 7-12 exams.  Students have received a copy of the exam schedule which has been reviewed with them by their middle school teams and high school teachers.  We wish our students the best of luck with studying and preparing for their upcoming exams and urge all students to be sure to get their proper rest in addition to studying hard.

In December, the West Boylston High School art and music departments were very proud to present this year’s community arts night.  At this Open House event, student artwork was on display and members of the band and chorus performed for parents and friends as part of their “performance grade”.. Community members who attended were also able to see “live art” as students worked on computer graphics designs, pottery, painting, drawing and sculpture while answering questions from the visitors about their work.  Many of the works of art are still proudly on display in the middle high school lobby for students and staff to enjoy.

Middle school students are currently working hard to prepare for their performance of Beauty and The Beast Jr.  The play cast and crew have been meeting evenings throughout the week to learn lines, block scenes, and to rehearse music and dance numbers.  The play seems to be coming along nicely and has a cast of over 30 middle school students. The play directors are West Boylston parents Kevin and Karen Baldwin and the play is being sponsored by the WBMHS PTA under the direction of Tammy Bourque.  Tech week for the show will run from April 4-7 with performances on April 8th and 9th at 7:00 PM.  Thank you in advance for your support of their efforts and we hope to see you at the show in April.

Congratulations once again to grade 8 student Jaelin Fleming who will participate in this year’s Project 351.  This event is sponsored by the Governor and brings together 8th grade students from all 351 middle school within the commonwealth to celebrate community service learning and honoring future civic leaders for the work that they do in their schools and within their own cities and towns.  We are pleased to send our representative (Jaelin) from West Boylston to this event which will be held on Saturday January 16th in Boston where she will be accompanied by her guidance counselor Ms. Rebecca Spencer.  

Congratulations to senior John Amaral.  John was West Boylston’s Superintendent’s Association Scholar recipient for this year.  John was honored at WPI along with top students from every public high school in Worcester county.  It was an honor to attend this event with John and we are so proud of his accomplishments.

Our middle and high school winter sports teams are competing hard.  Basketball and cheerleading teams are about half way through their seasons.  Boys’ and Girls’ basketball teams appear to be headed to the postseason playoffs thanks to senior class leadership and consistent play.  Our cheerleaders have performed at each home game in robust numbers, reflecting their growing program and expanding their roster for home games to include both junior varsity and varsity squads.  The varsity team will be competing in 2-3 competitions in the month of February that will test their stunting, gymnastics and coordinated dancing abilities.  I’d be remiss if I did not offer congratulations to our four high school hockey players who have successfully earned spots on both the junior varsity and varsity teams at Assabet.  We congratulate all of our student athletes for their hard work and balancing their commitment to academics and athletics.

Our business club or D.E.C.A. is scheduled to compete in a regional competition in Boxborough with Mr. Palmi.  Our Math Team (high school freshmen level) may be small, but it is very enthusiastic!  This year we have four sixth-graders on the team.  The team meets weekly to practice a topic for the next math meet and compete in the Worcester County Mathematics League.  Each student has scored points in a meet which is impressive because of their grade level.  The team will become more competitive each year as our students gain experience and skills.  Next math team meet is in February.

We are excited to host a parent/student information evening on Thursday January 14th.  We will be presenting an overview of our high school curriculum and co-curricular opportunities.  We have several alumni and recent graduates coming to speak about how “well-prepared” for college they were upon graduating from WB.  That afternoon we will also present middle and high school science fair projects to the community in our media center and front lobby.  We are proud of our students’ work and equally proud to share the excellent opportunities that we offer for high school students.
