Parents of grade 8 students enrolled in algebra I
I’m writing to you as your child’s new principal to follow-up on the letter that you received on June 11, 2015 notifying you that your child has been recommended for grade 8 algebra I. By now you should have read, signed and returned the form that indicates that your child would like to enroll in the grade 8 algebra I course and will complete the required summer math work for this program.
Included in this email is a link that contains the summer math packet here:
The work included in this summer packet will introduce your child to important pre-algebra concepts that they will be expected to understand at a ‘beginner’ comprehension level. These skills and concepts will be expanded upon at the beginning of the grade 8 algebra course. Key concepts and practicing these concepts will be an important part of preparing for the grade 8 algebra course. Topics such as plotting coordinate points, ordered pairs, scatter plots, graphing linear equations, x-intercept, y-intercept, finding Slope of a line, writing linear equations, slope-intercept form and point/slope formula are included.
In addition to the packet, a separate link to Khan Academy is embedded here https://www.khanacademy.org/ as a reference for students and parents. Also, I am available (along with a math teacher and/or math tutor) to assist students with questions or to review concepts on four separate Wednesdays in the middle/high school Media Center over the summer.
Please feel free to drop in to discuss the course, the packet of summer work or to have questions answered about grade 8 algebra in general. I will look forward to meeting you and your student.
